A pasta dish with the perfect combination – chicken and penne pasta in a creamy ranch flavoured pasta sauce all finished off with some smoky crispy bacon. Whats not to love?.
If there is any pasta kind of dish I know my family will love its one that combines all their favourites things, and this dish definitely ticks all those boxes – creamy sauce, chicken and bacon.
On the weekends, I usually roast or cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker. That way, we always have chicken left over, which is great for making quick and easy meals during the week.
Good question, and its something that not everyone is familiar with. I first sampled some Ranch sauce all the way back in 2000 when I was working at a childrens summer camp in upstate NY, it wasnt like anything Id ever tasted before but boy was it addictive. Strangely though I kind of forgot about it and never had it again until I moved to Canada in 2008.
People here really like ranch, a dipping sauce or dressing that is usually made with buttermilk, herbs like dill, chives, and parsley, spices like garlic and onion, and salt. Typically for Ranch Chicken Pasta a powder version is used, but hey I know how all of you reading in the UK are never going to be able to find that without ordering from some place online and its really easily to just replicate the flavours with ingredients we all have at home.
If you can find ranch powder mix and want to use that instead, that’s fine. Most recipes call for about 2 tablespoons of the powdered mix, but I personally think that’s too much, and we like it better with my own blend that we’ve grown to love.
Hey, pasta fans! I’m so excited to share Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta, one of my all-time favorite comfort food recipes that never fails. I’ve been making this recipe for years and it’s always a hit with my family. The best part? It only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish making it perfect for those busy weeknights when you’re tempted to order takeout. So let’s dive right in!

- Crowd-pleaser – Even picky eaters love this combination of flavors
- Great for leftovers – Tastes amazing the next day (if there’s any left!)
- Customizable – Easy to add veggies or switch up the pasta type

Ingredients You’ll Need
For this delicious pasta dish. gather these ingredients
For the Pasta and Protein:
- 2 cups uncooked rotini pasta (or any pasta shape you prefer)
- 6 strips of bacon (thick-cut works best)
- 2 small boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
For the Creamy Ranch Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 2 cups half and half (or heavy cream for extra richness)
- 2 tablespoons dry ranch dressing mix
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (freshly shredded from a block melts better!)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cook the Bacon
First things first – let’s get that bacon crispy!
- Add the bacon strips to a large skillet over low heat.
- Cook them slow and low (trust me, this is the best way for perfectly crispy bacon).
- Once crispy, remove and place on paper towels to drain.
- Save those bacon drippings in a small bowl – we’ll use them to cook the chicken!
- Once cooled, roughly chop the bacon into bite-sized pieces.
2. Prepare the Chicken
Now let’s make that chicken super flavorful:
- Cut your chicken breasts into thinner slices (they’ll plump up when cooked).
- Pat them dry with paper towels – this helps them get a nice sear.
- Season both sides with salt, pepper, onion powder and Italian seasoning.
- Heat about 2 tablespoons of the reserved bacon drippings in your skillet over medium-high heat.
- Sear the chicken for 3-4 minutes on each side until you get a gorgeous golden-brown crust.
- Remove chicken to a plate and let it rest for at least 5 minutes.
- Cut chicken into bite-sized cubes or strips.
3. Boil the Pasta
While your chicken is cooking or resting:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Add the rotini pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente.
- Drain when finished but don’t rinse! We want that starch to help our sauce stick.
4. Make the Creamy Ranch Sauce
This sauce is what makes this dish so dang good:
- Using the same skillet you cooked the chicken in, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for another minute to make a roux.
- For best results, warm your half and half in the microwave for about 40 seconds.
- Slowly add the warmed half and half to the skillet in splashes, stirring constantly.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle bubble, then reduce heat to low.
- Stir in the ranch seasoning mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the shredded cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.
- The sauce will continue to thicken as it stands, so don’t worry if it seems a bit thin at first.
5. Combine Everything Together
Time to bring this masterpiece together:
- Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the sauce and gently fold together.
- Mix in the chicken pieces and let them warm back up in the sauce.
- Either stir in the bacon pieces or sprinkle them on top as a garnish.
- Give it a taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
- Serve immediately while hot and creamy!
Pro Tips for the Best Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta
I’ve learned some important tips that make a big difference after making this dish many times:
-
Use block cheese – Pre-shredded cheese has anti-caking agents that can make your sauce grainy. Grating from a block gives you a much smoother, creamier sauce.
-
Don’t overcook the pasta – Aim for al dente or even slightly under if you plan to bake it as a casserole. Nobody likes mushy pasta!
-
Save some pasta water – If your sauce gets too thick, a splash of starchy pasta water helps thin it out while maintaining creaminess.
-
Use thick-cut bacon – It provides more drippings for cooking the chicken and stands up better texturally in the final dish.
-
Let the chicken rest – This keeps it juicy when you cut it up. Nobody wants dry chicken!
Make It a Complete Meal
Want to round out this meal? Here are some easy additions:
- Add frozen peas or mixed vegetables right to the sauce
- Serve with a simple side salad
- Pair with garlic bread for the ultimate comfort food experience
- Roasted broccoli makes a perfect veggie side
Variations to Try
One of the reasons I love this recipe is how flexible it is:
- Veggie version: Add spinach, bell peppers, or broccoli
- Protein swap: Use smoked sausage or leftover turkey instead of chicken
- Pasta options: Any shape works – penne, bow ties, cavatappi all hold the sauce well
- Spicy kick: Add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes
- Extra cheesy: Mix in some mozzarella or Parmesan for more cheese pull
Make-Ahead and Storage Options
This dish is great for meal prep! Here’s how to store it:
Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: This pasta freezes surprisingly well! Store in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.
Casserole Method:
- Prepare recipe as written but cook pasta just to al dente
- Transfer to a 9×13 baking dish
- Top with an additional 1.5 cups shredded cheddar
- Cover and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes
Make-Ahead Method:
- Cook pasta slightly under al dente (1 minute less than package directions)
- Assemble the dish as written
- Transfer to a baking dish and top with extra cheese
- Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days
- When ready to serve, bake covered at 350°F for 40 minutes
- Uncover and bake 5 more minutes
Why This Recipe Works Every Time
I’ve tried many chicken bacon ranch pasta recipes, but this one consistently delivers the best results. The secret is in the details – cooking the chicken in bacon drippings adds amazing flavor, using dry ranch mix gives that perfect seasoning without being overwhelming, and the technique for the sauce ensures it’s creamy every time.
The dish is much better than the sum of its parts because it has tender chicken, crispy bacon bits, and creamy ranch sauce. It’s really one of those recipes that makes people want more!

Can I use Quark?
Please dont got adding quark to this dish, it will ruin it. Yes I know its super low calories and free on some plans, but quark is not cream cheese. I see this mistake made so often.
Quark is actually a soft cheese, and it has a sour taste, it is in no way creamy and will not yield the same creamy sauce you get with cream cheese. You want light/lowfat Philadelphia (or a supermarkets own brand) for this recipe.
The main reason for this is that the heat is too low. It needs to be bubbling on high heat so that the cream cheese can fully melt. Once it does, it will quickly cool down, especially when the cheddar or parmesan cheese is added.
Also make sure you are not using a small frying pan, you need a large circumference pan so that the sauce is in a thin even layer and can be heated evenly, all crammed in a small pan will mean it will take much longer to reduce.
Either of those are fine to use in this recipe, Parmesan does has a strong flavour but its quite a small amount, So use whatever you prefer.
Make sure you use blocks of cheese that you grate yourself instead of pre-grated cheese, which may be coated and won’t melt as well into the sauce, leading to a grainy sauce or powdered cheese that isn’t really parmesan at all.
If you want to add more cheese, then of course you can do that too.
